2003 THOMAS FOGARTY WINERY
Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine Enthusiast Magazine - June, 2008
93 Points / Cellar Selection
To begin with, it’s a very fine, well-structured Cab, rich and vibrant in cassis and smoky oak flavors.  It shows the deep integrity that the best Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernets possess.  However, it’s quite tannic, which gives it a palate astringency.  So, will it age?  Odds are strongly in favor of it.  Best 2009-2015.  Cellar Selection.

Wine Maker Notes:

About Fogarty
Few wine regions on earth can match Santa Cruz Mountains’ climates, soils and vertigo-inspiring views. Set high in the mountains overlooking California’s Silicon Valley, the Thomas Fogarty winery has been making single-vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet from the SCM appellation since 1981. Fogarty’s two estates are divided into micro-vineyards, ranging from .25 to 5.25 acres, based on soil and topography. All are maritime (12-18 miles to Pacific), cool-climate (Regions I and II), high-elevation (1600-2300 feet), low yielding (1-3 tons per acre) and mountainous. The winery was founded by Dr. Thomas Fogarty, a Stanford cardiovascular surgeon and world-renowned inventor.

Vintage
The 2003 growing season was excellent for all Bordeaux varieties in the Santa Cruz Mountains. A warm September ensured that our cool-climate mountain fruit ripened beautifully. Many of our 2003 reds possess great extract and huge mouth-filling tannins that coat the palate.

Vineyards & Winemaking
We sourced Cabernet Sauvignon from four different vineyards located in four distinct meso-climates throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains. After de-stemming and a 3-7 day cold soak (depending on the fruit) we fermented all lots separately. A small amount of Malbec and Cabernet Franc from our Estate Gist Ranch was blended in to add texture and aromatics. The wine was aged for 22 months in a combination of new (27%) and used American, French and Hungarian oak barrels.
We think this is our finest SCM Cabernet to date and represents the cumulative efforts of years of searching for appropriate sites in the appellation that can properly ripen Bordeaux varietals on a consistent basis.

Tasting Notes
Classic Cab aromas of cassis, blackberry, fresh loam and tobacco followed by more red and black fruits on the palate. It is dense and concentrated with bright acidity, mouth-coating tannins and great presence. This wine begs for classic Cabernet pairings such as slow cooked beef, roast meats or grilled steaks.
