Wine Maker Notes:

About Fogarty
Few wine regions on earth can match Santa Cruz Mountains’ climates, soils and vertigo-inspiring views. Set high in the mountains overlooking California’s Silicon Valley, the Thomas Fogarty winery has been making single-vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet from the SCM appellation since 1981. Fogarty’s two estates are divided into micro-vineyards, ranging from .25 to 5.25 acres, based on soil and topography. All are maritime (12-18 miles to Pacific), cool-climate (Regions I and II), high-elevation (1600-2300 feet), low yielding (1-3 tons per acre) and mountainous. The winery was founded by Dr. Thomas Fogarty, a Stanford cardiovascular surgeon and world-renowned inventor.

Vintage
The 2003 growing season was an excellent vintage for all of California. A warm September ensured perfect ripening. Many of our 2003 reds possess great extract and huge mouth-filling tannins that coat the palate.

Vineyards
We source Barbera from the warmer Lodi region and Nebbiolo from the cool reaches of Carneros. By harvesting grapes from contrasting sites in different AVAs offering unique soils and climates we can create a wine with greater complexity and balance.

Winemaking
Open top fermented in small lots, we barrel age our Barbiolo in small French and American oak for 18 months to mellow and soften the tannins and meld the fruit and spice flavors.

Tasting Notes
Taking our inspiration from the blends of the Langhe in the Piedmont Region of northern Italy, this blend of Barbera and Nebbiolo has aromas and flavors of earth and dried cherries balanced by firm tannins and great acidity. Already drinking wonderfully, we suggest consuming this wine over the next 3-5 years to fully enjoy the cranberry and tobacco flavors in their vibrant youth.
